Keep the LYMPH and LOVE flowing

I’ve been flat chested most of my life (with the exception of nursing my babies). I was okay with it growing up. I didn’t mind that I could get away with not wearing a bra with a cute summer dress with spaghetti straps.

The only reason I even started wearing a bra in 6th grade, was because the gym teacher said we were getting tested for scoliosis, and we would need to take our shirts off.

It’s not that I didn’t like this part of my body, it’s just that I didn’t pay much attention to it. I ignored my small breasts.  “I don’t have any boobs…so what is there to take care of?” I would think.

I will say, I did feel more connected to my breasts when I was nursing my 2 children.  I would stare into their eyes in awe, while drunk on oxytocin. I was amazed that my body had plumped up these giving and receiving organs for the first time in my life! I loved those special moments with my babies It was incredible that the sweet nectar coming from me was keeping them alive and well.

But when I stopped nursing, I went back to my flat chest….and I went back ignoring my flat chest.

Ayurveda has taught me SO much about breast health, and the importance of nurturing this part of my body, no matter what shape and size they are.

Breasts are mostly made up of rasa (lymph) and meda (fatty) dhatu, or tissue. Proper flow of lymph is a must for breast health, which is why Ayurveda recommends a daily breast massage.  The lymphatic system is part of the immune system. It keeps body fluid levels in balance and defends the body against infections.  As long as lymph moves, toxins can be removed, ducts are less likely to become blocked, and less accumulation occurs.

Not only can there be physical blockages, due to poor lymph drainage, but the chest/breast area is also the area of the heart charka; our energetic location of love, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion.

There can also be emotional congestion in the breasts, and blockages due to unprocessed emotions (a much bigger conversation).

I now give my breasts the care, attention and love that they deserve. My days of ignoring my flat chest are gone. Supporting my breast health is now a part of my regular self care. I keep the lymph and LOVE flowing!

Be well,
Shannon

*Note:  It is important to point out that proper lymph flow is crucial to both men and women.  There are lots of other ways to minimize overaccumulation and stagnation in the breast and chest area, such as sweating, pranayama (breath work), yoga (especially heart openers), and avoiding underwire bras.
